The modern Olympic Games began in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Revived by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, the Games were inspired by the ancient Olympics held in Olympia. The 1896 edition featured 14 nations and 241 male athletes competing in 43 events. It laid the foundation for what would become the world’s largest sporting event.
Held every four years, the Olympics now include both Summer and Winter editions and bring together thousands of athletes from over 200 countries in a celebration of sports, culture, and international unity.
